Chapter 1

Someone was in the room. She kept her eyes closed, held her breath and listened. The quiet told her nothing. She could not shake the feeling that she was not alone. She opened her eyes enough to see without moving her head. There was nothing but silence and the reflection of the streetlight on the ceiling. The breeze moving the leaves changed the pattern ever so gently. She raised her head and looked around the room. I must be dreaming. Maybe I’m wrong about Derrick. It’s been a long day and my imagination is working overtime. She closed her eyes and turned on her side, toward the wall.

I’m not comfortable being alone in the house with Derrick. I don’t trust him. I can’t shake the feeling that he will attempt to make a move on me before the night is over. He’s let me know a dozen times that he wants to touch me. Why did Mom leave me alone with him? I hope I’m wrong. I don’t like him. I wish Mom never brought him home. What did Mom see in him? I hate to say it, but I actually loath him, find him repulsive and have no desire to have anything to do with him. He’s a snake. Maybe I’m mistaken and he won’t bother me.
